This was my first groyne-top photograph. I was captivated by its colours and the way it looked like a small self-contained world, washed by the water and weather and bound by a rusting metal band. I didn’t realise at the time that photographing Whitstable’s groynes would become a bit of an obsession - but nor did I realise how different each one is, and how they change throughout the year. I love how the rusty metal band looks like it’s leached it’s deep iron colours through this groyne top. Even it’s deep cracks and crevices are filled with rust coloured pebbles. The tide is a clever artist.
